Summary

Compression runs entirely inside your browser on your own device. Modern browsers use a fast hardware-accelerated path; older browsers use a slower in-browser fallback path on the same device. Either way, your video file never uploads to any server. There is no server-side compression path. Because nothing is uploaded, there is nothing for us to store, analyse, share, or sell.

Browser compression: no video ever uploads

When you click Compress, your video file is read directly from your disk into the browser's memory, re-encoded by your device's GPU/CPU, and written back to disk as a download. No byte of video content leaves your computer, no request is sent to our servers carrying video data, and there is nothing for us to retain because we never see the file.

On browsers that don't support hardware-accelerated video encoding (mostly very old or locked-down installations) we fall back to a slower in-browser engine that still runs entirely on your own device. Same privacy guarantee: your file never leaves your device.

What we do collect

We collect a small amount of non-content telemetry to keep the site working and measure how it performs:

• Public counter: when a compression succeeds in your browser, your browser sends a small "original size, compressed size" ping so the homepage running total stays accurate. No filename, no content, no identifier.
• Funnel events: anonymous events like "compression_started", "encode_failed_with_reason", country and edge region, browser user-agent string. These help us debug capability gaps and improve the engine. Retained for 90 days, then automatically dropped. See Third-party services below for the data processor.
• Google Analytics 4: anonymous traffic analytics (page views, country, device type). Governed by Google's privacy policy.
• Cookieless Web Analytics: anonymous Core Web Vitals measurement, no cookies set, no individual tracking. See Third-party services below for the provider.

We do not set advertising cookies. We do not run behavioural retargeting. There is no compression-job cookie because there is no server-side compression job.

Third-party services

• Cloudflare: DNS, CDN, Workers (the public counter and the funnel-telemetry endpoints), Web Analytics, Analytics Engine
• Vercel: hosting for the static frontend and Next.js pages
• Google Analytics 4: anonymous traffic analytics

Data retention

Uploaded videos: not applicable, no upload happens.
Funnel telemetry (no video content): retained for 90 days, then automatically dropped.
Google Analytics data: retained for 14 months, then auto-deleted by Google.

Your rights under GDPR and CCPA

If you are in the European Economic Area, United Kingdom, or California, you have additional rights regarding your personal data:

• Right to access: request a copy of any personal data we hold about you
• Right to deletion: request that we delete personal data we hold. Since video files never upload, the strongest right is largely satisfied automatically.
• Right to opt out of sale: we do not sell personal data to any third party
• Right to object to processing: you can opt out of Google Analytics via a browser extension or by sending a Do Not Track signal
• Right to data portability: you can request your data in a machine-readable format

Children's privacy

CompressYourVideo.com is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal data, contact [email protected] and we will delete it promptly.

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. If we make material changes we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.
